Craft room decor ideas
I have still not finished with my craft room and am struggling a little to get it in order, so that I will want to work in there every day.
I need some inspiration, so I have decided to share what I found with you.
It is important to have sufficient work space, this will allow you to leave projects that you are working on out for you to continue to work on the next day or when you are up to it.
Sunlight plays a very important role in how you view your craft room. If you are lucky enough to have a room that receives ample light, you are one of the lucky ones, as usually the room that gets allocated as the craft room is the dark and dreary room on the other side of the house. My craft room is one of these, it doesn’t get much light and is rather cold.
Make the most of your walls by installing shelves along the wall. You will be grateful for the storage space.
Everyone loves a little vintage. Use those old storage containers to hold your odds and ends. It will look good and serve as a practical storage solution.
Tuck away all electronics. Lets be honest, all electrical stuff looks ghastly. So, when not in use stow them away and out of sight.
Tools of the trade, your most prized possessions. Keep them organised and easy to access. The top drawer of your desk would be ideal.
Organised, organised, organised. The key to a successful craft room design is most definitely an organised room.
‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ has never rung more true. The main reason for me not spending more time in my craft room is the fact that I don’t have enough storage and the storage that I do have is not used properly.
The use of see-through cabinets is ideal. You can see where everything is stored and therefore you will save ample time looking for supplies.
Task lighting for activities such as sewing is of paramount importance in your craft room design. If you are like me and do most of your crafts in the evening, lighting should be one of your main concerns, especially in a very dark room.
‘I can’t find that green button! You know the one with the thing on it!’ Sound familiar. I am certainly guilty. Store similar supplies together. It may sound simple, but when you regularly by new things, you may get into the habit of not storing them correctly.
AH! One of my most favourite things in the whole wide world… inspirational boards. I love at seeing pictures of inspirational boards that belong to creative people, they are always so interesting and full of visual surprises. A definite must for all craft rooms.
Why not use your supplies as decor. That will mean that your decor in your craft room will be ever evolving as you use up and replace your supplies.
Having a space for every task you peform in your craft room is ideal. For example, an area to do your digital work, a desk for completing your handmade projects, an ironing area, a storage area, etc.
Using glass storage containers is a wonderful idea. You will always know where everything is and it looks pretty too…

Even More Craft Room Storage Ideas
I have published a few posts on Craft Room Storage and here is another one…
If you are like me and you love things that are old, then use this as an inspiration and bring vintage inspired storage items into your craft room decor.
This is such a stunning craft room. The storage is neat and co-ordinated. The boxes can be market so that you always know where everything is.
Always make sure that all your supplies are within easy reach. By effectively using the space above your desk is a great idea and making it see-through is the best idea.
Storing your printers and copiers can sometimes be a littly trick. Make sure that is is easly accessible and neat. This photo illustrates the point…
If you have things in your craft room that you don’t really use to often, store them neatly in pretty storage boxes, like these. You can stack them as high as you like, as long as there is no risk of them falling and you know you won’t need something in the bottom box for a while.
I absolutely love these suitcases. I would love them in my craft room. They would make excellent storage for odds and bobbs.
Another ingenius idea – store your ribbon and lace on standard postage tags. Colour code them as well, this will make locating the ribbon or lace you require much easier.
Install a rod into the bottom of your shelves. This will make excellent storage for your rolls of ribbon.
Personal Style – that should be your main inspiration. Definitely bring your personality into your craft room. After all, it is YOUR space, you should be happy and comfortable working in your space.
Peg board – it must have been invented by a woman – it has so many storage uses. It can be left plan for storing things in the garage or painted your favourite colour for inclusion in your craft room. Simply nail in a few nails or hooks into the board and hang whatever you choose.
Storing paper on your wall is easy. Use dowel rods and hooks for a cheap solution. So, now your favourite rolls of wrapping paper is perfectly stored and ready to use.
Personlise boring white storage drawers by decoupaging your favourite pattered papper onto them. Simply pretty!
If you would prefer you could conceal all your crafting paraphernalia behind a curtain.
Glorious baskets and all their uses. What an excellent idea. Perfectly co-ordinate your craft room, by storing all your crafting goods in baskets…

Craft Room Storage Ideas
I have been a little obsessive with craft room ideas lately, so here is some more advice…
1. Every craft room needs an inspiration board. Here is the perfect place for you to express yourself and pour your personality into. You can change it as often as you like and is especially effective when used as inspiration for your current projects.
2. Even if you only have a small space to work in, you can make the most of it. Always make sure that you have good task lighting, it will make working at night much easier.
3. Organising your cotton and thread is important. This will ensure that you don’t purchase duplicate colours and they are handy when you need them, saving you time and energy. Sorting by colour and type is rather effective.
4. Transparent storage is another wonderful idea, as you will be able to see what is inside, making things easy to find.
I will have some more ideas for you soon…

Craft Room Inspiration
My craft room is in serious need of attention, so I thought I would gather some inspiration and here is a summary of my findings…
- Storage seems to be the most important component, which makes sense. Because if, like me, you dabble in a few crafts, you will want versatile storage that will change with your needs. Lightweight, movable storage will do the trick.
- Give yourself some time to design and organise your space. It won’t happen overnight, so become familiar with your space and how you work in it for a while before making concrete installations, such as shelves and storage furniture.
- Colour inspires creativity. So, pick colours that speak to you and use them in your organisation. I love pastels in interior decor, so they will be my inspiration.
- Customise your space – it is yours after all. You need to be comfortable and organised to easily create. Even if your space is small, use corners and height to install shelves and cupboards.
- A place for everything and everything in its place. Hmmm, this is a difficult one, especially if you are like me and are not good at being tidy. I can’t even remember how many times I have wasted hours looking for something. It not only wastes time it wastes energy as well. Lesson learnt “Cut the Clutter”- I need to be more tidy and organised.
- Ah, Martha Stewart. Love her or hate her, the chick has built an empire. There is a whole section on her website on how to organise crafts, click here, to check it out.
Here are some inspirational photos…
Do you have any great tips for me?

My Craft Room: The Beginning
So, I’m a little behind on my craft room project, but plan to catch up this weekend.
Two weeks ago my husband and I painted our bedroom and My Craft Room. It looks much better.
Before

After
We used Dulux Soft Stone in the Craft Room and Dulux Cafe Mocha in the bedroom.
This weekend we plan to put up shelves and paint my trestle table. I also plan to make an ottoman, that will also be used to store magazines.
I’ll let you know how it goes…

Day Off
Yesterday I was fortunate enough to get the day off. I work for HOMEMAKERSonline, which I thoroughly enjoy. Besides going to the dentist to get a crown (am I now a princess? – hehehehe), I got stuck into our spare room and started to create a craft room for myself.
I was slightly annoyed with the retailer where I bought my wood for my table, as they cut the piece that was supposed to be the table top, too small. But that will give me an excuse to get another piece and use this piece to create an ottoman.
I sorted out all my ribbon and paper, which felt good. David will put shelves up for me on the weekend. I hung other curtains up, which immediately made a huge difference. I will make a tie-back this evening.
As I go along, I will post some photos. I’m so excited to finally have my own space to work in…
